Monday 3rd Grade-

 The third grade TAG students are learning about our National Treasures. They are actively involved in reading about the National Park Service and their role in protecting and preserving our nation’s history.

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

Our unit on the “Pilgrim’s Challenge” is off to a fantastic start. This week we discussed the Pilgrim’s trip across the Atlantic and the challenges that the travelers faced. Students also learned more about the reasons why the Pilgrims were so ready to leave their country. Students participated in a class discussion about religious freedom and how they would feel if they did not have the freedom to choose their own religion.

Wednesday 4th Grade

Fourth grade students are learning about the interdependent relationships that exist in our National Park System. This week we took a “field trip” to Everglades National Park. Ask your students to share with you what they learned about this unique environment.

Thursday 5th Grade

Is it possible to have triumph during a time of terror? This was the question that the fifth grade class explored this week. Students read about the history of Jim Crow Laws and how they affected the lives of African-Americans in the south.

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

Our unit on the “Pilgrim’s Challenge” is off to a fantastic start. We have discussed the differences and similarities between Thanksgiving today and Thanksgiving 350 years ago. Ask your students to share with you how things have changed over the past 350 years,

Wednesday 4th Grade

Fourth grade students are learning about the interdependent relationships that exist in our National Park System. This week we took a “field trip” to Yellowstone National Park. Ask your students to share with you what they learned about this unique environment.

Thursday 5th Grade

 Fifth grade students are learning about Georgia’s Barrier Islands and why they are important to us. Students have identified some possible threats to the islands and ways to overcome these threats.

This Week In TAG 11/16-11/20

Monday 3rd Grade-

Monday TAG classes did not meet this week. We will resume on Monday, November 23, 2009.

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

We ended our trip around the world with a final stop in Panama. Students learned about the Panama Canal and how it has helped our economy. Students also created teaching boards to share with others the information that they have learned about the countries we visited. We will share these boards with others next Tuesday in our class.

Wednesday 4th Grade

Fourth grade students are preparing for their survival Pow-Wow. They spent the past two weeks researching information about how Native Americans utilized science to meet their survival needs. Students will compile their research into a four to five minute presentation and share this information with others.

Thursday 5th Grade

This week students compiled their research for their final presentations on the fictitious E-coli outbreak. Students have identified an action plan to hopefully prevent any future E-coli outbreaks. This information will be presented to others in the form of a power point or webpage created by the students.

Weekly TAG Highlights 11/02-11/06

Monday 3rd Grade-

As we continue our unit on American Footprints, the focus this week was on Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison invented many things. His favorite invention was the phonograph. However his most famous invention was the electric light bulb. In class students had the opportunity to discover how a circuit works and made a circuit to light a bulb.  Ask your students to explain how Thomas Edison is an example of a problem solver.

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

This week we traveled to Kenya. Students learned about the beautiful landscape of this country. Students took on the role of a nomad in Kenya to write about what their life would be like in this country. Ask your students to locate Kenya on a map or globe.

Wednesday 4th Grade

As we continue our unit on Native Americans and Astronomy, this week students took on the role of a newly established tribe trying to decide where to settle. Students developed criteria for their new home and researched to find the place that best met their criteria. Ask your students to tell you where they decided to settle and why.

Thursday 5th Grade

This week the Epidemic unit took an unexpected turn for the worst. While students were able to properly diagnose one patient in time for him to receive the appropriate treatment, another patient slipped through the cracks. Students are constantly working to identify the cause of the outbreak and develop an action plan to prevent future outbreaks. They even read an article about a recent E-coli outbreak and ground beef recall. This event really helped students to identify the real life implications of our unit.

Monday 3rd Grade-

As we continue our unit on American Footprints, the focus this week was on Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin was an author, scientist, inventor, and a noble statesman. He left his footprint on our lives in many different areas. He invented a stove that is still in use today. His stove could heat a house better than an open fire and it used less fuel. Ask your students to explain how Benjamin Franklin is an example of a problem solver.

 

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

 This week we traveled to France. France is a country on the continent of Europe. We learned that we use many words in our language that were borrowed from the French. Students also had the opportunity to sample croissants, one of the breads that we borrowed from the French culture. Ask your students to tell you the capital of the country and some of the products that are produced there.

 

Wednesday 4th Grade

 As we continue our unit on Native Americans and Astronomy, this week we focused on Native American folklore. Students read a variety of Native American folktales and identified common characteristics of the stories. Students also created their own folktale to explain a scientific process or natural phenomenon. Ask your student to share his or her story with you.

 

Thursday 5th Grade

 This week we continued to review contagious disease reports to learn more about the patients who have been affected by the E-coli outbreak. Students have organized their research to identify similarities in the patterns among their patients. They are beginning to develop a theory for the source of the outbreak and the pattern of transmission. Students are also identifying patients who appear to be suffering from complications with the E-coli outbreak. The students are very engaged in this unit.

 

 

This Week In TAG

Monday 3rd Grade-

 As we continue our unit on American Footprints, we continue to learn more about people who have left their mark on history. This week students learned about Eli Whitney and the invention of the Cotton Gin. Last week the focus was on George Washington Carver and how his idea of crop rotation impacted the agricultural industry. Ask your students to explain how the Cotton Gin revolutionized the textile industry and how this invention affected slavery.

 

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

This week we traveled to Brazil. Did you know that Brazil is home to the largest rainforest? The students learned about the Amazon Rainforest and why it is so important to the people in Brazil and other parts of the world. Students learned about many products that come from this resourceful country.

 

Wednesday 4th Grade

 As we continue our unit on Native Americans and Astronomy, we discussed how certain scientific processes affect our ability to survive. The students researched the phases of the moon and the names that the Native Americans gave to each full moon. Ask your students to tell you the current phase of the moon and what it represents in the Native American culture.

 

Thursday 5th Grade

 This week we reviewed several contagious disease reports to identify the source of the E-coli outbreak. Students have taken on the role of employees of a county health department responding to a crisis (E-coli outbreak). Students must develop a theory and communicate with the health commissioner to ask the right questions in order to contain the outbreak. The students are very engaged in this unit. Ask your student what he or she has learned about E-coli and how it affects the body.

Monday 3rd Grade-

 This week in class we discussed three historical documents. These documents were The Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The Constitution. We discussed how each of these documents solved a problem in some way. Ask your students about the writers and the time periods in which these documents were written. Allow them to share what they think life would be like if these documents had never been written.

 

Tuesday 1st and 2nd Grades

 This week we traveled to Australia. Did you know that Australia is a country, a continent, and an island? The students learned about the Great Barrier Reef and many of the problems that threaten the reef. We even created our own coral reef in class. Ask your students about the other countries we have visited this year.

 

Wednesday 4th Grade

 As we continue our unit on Native Americans and Astronomy, we discussed how certain scientific processes affect our ability to survive. We studied weather patterns in various cities and made graphs to represent the information that we researched. Native Americans had to also study weather patterns in order to know how to dress, when to plant crops, and best times to hunt for food.

 

Thursday 5th Grade

 Last week we diagnosed the mysterious illness that was affecting several people in a small town. After careful research, we have concluded that the people were feeling the effects of an outbreak of E coli. This week we researched to learn more about this disease and how each person was exposed to the disease.
